Uganda – Gorilla Trekking, Wildlife Safaris and the Pearl of Africa 🦍

Some holidays are about relaxation. Others are about experiences that stay with you for the rest of your life.
Travel has changed enormously over the past few decades. Destinations that once seemed almost impossible to reach are now accessible to travellers looking for something a little more adventurous, unusual and, above all, memorable.
At DG Travel, we're finding that more and more clients are looking for what the industry calls experience-led travel.
Now, there's absolutely nothing wrong with lying on a beautiful beach, enjoying the sunshine and having the occasional cocktail brought to your sunlounger. We arrange plenty of those holidays too!
But increasingly, we're being asked about something different. Holidays that offer the chance to see extraordinary wildlife, explore remote landscapes, discover unfamiliar cultures and experience something that simply cannot be replicated anywhere else.
And one destination that offers all of this, and considerably more, is Uganda.
Imagine trekking through a tropical rainforest, surrounded by the sounds of birds and wildlife, before coming face to face with a family of mountain gorillas in their natural habitat.
It's difficult to imagine a more extraordinary travel experience.
Uganda – The Pearl of Africa
Described by Winston Churchill as the Pearl of Africa, Uganda is one of the continent's most remarkable and, in our opinion, often overlooked destinations.
While countries such as Kenya, Tanzania and South Africa tend to dominate the African safari market, Uganda offers something rather different.
Here you'll discover mist-covered mountains, vast lakes, tropical rainforests, thundering waterfalls and national parks teeming with wildlife.
And, of course, there are the mountain gorillas.
Uganda is home to a significant proportion of the world's remaining mountain gorillas, found primarily in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park and Mgahinga Gorilla National Park.
But there's considerably more to Uganda than gorilla trekking.
You can track chimpanzees through Kibale Forest, enjoy traditional game drives in search of elephants, lions, buffalo and other wildlife, take boat safaris along the Kazinga Channel, or marvel at the spectacular Murchison Falls, where the River Nile forces its way through a narrow gorge.
For birdwatchers, Uganda is particularly special, with more than 1,000 recorded bird species, including the extraordinary shoebill.
And because Uganda generally receives fewer international safari visitors than neighbouring Kenya and Tanzania, many of these experiences can feel wonderfully remote and personal.
Coming Face to Face with Mountain Gorillas
For many visitors, the highlight of any holiday to Uganda is undoubtedly the opportunity to observe mountain gorillas in the wild.
This isn't a zoo or a wildlife sanctuary. These are wild animals living in their natural environment.
Accompanied by experienced guides and trackers, you'll make your way through the forest in search of a habituated gorilla family.
The trek itself can vary considerably. Some gorilla families may be relatively accessible, while others require several hours of walking through steep, sometimes muddy rainforest terrain.
But then comes that extraordinary moment when you finally encounter them.
Watching a silverback resting among the vegetation, youngsters playing together or a mother caring for her infant is something that very few people ever forget.
Standard gorilla trekking permits generally allow one hour with the gorillas once they have been located, subject to park regulations and the animals' welfare.
It's an expensive experience, certainly, but one that offers something genuinely exceptional.
And importantly, regulated gorilla tourism contributes towards conservation efforts and supports communities living around the national parks.
Why Choosing the Right Tour Operator Matters
When arranging a holiday to somewhere like Uganda, I believe choosing the right company is every bit as important as deciding where to go.
These aren't conventional package holidays where you simply arrive at an airport, board a transfer coach and spend a fortnight beside a swimming pool.
There are gorilla permits to arrange, national park regulations to consider, internal flights or road transfers to coordinate, and accommodation that may be situated in relatively remote locations.
The logistics need to work properly.
That's why, at DG Travel, we work with specialist companies that understand these destinations and have the experience and local arrangements to support their clients throughout the journey.
One such company is Rainbow Tours, a specialist operator we use for tailor-made holidays to Africa and other more adventurous destinations.
Rainbow offers an extensive range of Uganda itineraries, from shorter five-night fly-in experiences concentrating on the mountain gorillas to longer journeys combining several national parks, wildlife encounters and different regions of the country.
For a destination like Uganda, that specialist knowledge and reliable local support are invaluable.
Three Extraordinary Ways to Discover Uganda
Whether you have just a few days available or would prefer to explore the country in greater depth, there are several different ways to experience Uganda.
Here are three itineraries from Rainbow Tours that we particularly like.
1. Essential Uganda – Amongst the Great Apes
9 nights | From ÂŁ8,825 per person
For those wanting to experience two of Africa's most remarkable primates, this itinerary combines chimpanzee tracking with mountain gorilla trekking.
You'll explore the evergreen forests of Kibale National Park, one of Africa's finest locations for observing chimpanzees in their natural habitat.
Watching these intelligent and highly social animals interacting, communicating and moving through the forest is a fascinating experience.
The journey also includes time in Bwindi Impenetrable Forest, where you'll have the opportunity to track mountain gorillas.
This is an excellent choice for travellers whose main interest is wildlife, particularly primates, and who want a more comprehensive Ugandan experience.

2. Simply Uganda – From Forest to Savannah
7 nights | From ÂŁ6,740 per person
This itinerary combines two very different sides of Uganda.
First, there's the unforgettable experience of trekking through Bwindi Forest in search of mountain gorillas.
Then you'll discover the open landscapes and wildlife of Queen Elizabeth National Park, one of Uganda's best-known safari destinations.
The park is home to elephants, buffalo, hippos, numerous antelope species and a remarkable variety of birds.
It's also famous for the tree-climbing lions sometimes seen in the Ishasha sector, an unusual behaviour that makes sightings particularly memorable.
For clients who would like to combine a traditional African safari with gorilla trekking, this offers an appealing balance.
3. Gorilla Express Uganda – A Short but Extraordinary Adventure
5 nights | From ÂŁ4,710 per person
Not everyone has two or three weeks available for an African adventure.
For those who particularly want to see the mountain gorillas but have limited time, Rainbow's Gorilla Express itinerary offers a shorter alternative.
Using domestic flights to reduce lengthy road journeys, this holiday focuses on the magnificent Bwindi Impenetrable Forest and the opportunity to encounter mountain gorillas.
It's an excellent option for travellers who want to concentrate on this remarkable experience without committing to a longer multi-park safari.
It could also be considered as part of a wider African holiday, depending on flight connections and the time available.

Is Gorilla Trekking Suitable for Everyone?
One thing I would always discuss with clients considering Uganda is the physical nature of gorilla trekking.
Although you don't need to be an experienced mountaineer, a reasonable level of fitness is important.
The forest can be steep, muddy and humid, and the length and difficulty of a trek cannot be guaranteed in advance.
There may be opportunities to hire local porters to assist with equipment and provide support along the route, something I would certainly recommend considering.
The minimum age for gorilla trekking in Uganda is generally 15 years.
It's also important to plan well ahead, particularly if travelling during popular periods, as gorilla permits are limited and availability can be restricted.
For many people, the physical effort involved becomes part of the experience, but it's essential to understand what the trip entails before booking.
A Holiday That Is About More Than the Price
There's no disguising the fact that these are expensive holidays.
When you look at prices starting from around ÂŁ4,700 per person for a shorter trip, rising to considerably more for longer itineraries, it's clearly a significant investment.
But I think it's important to look at what you're actually experiencing.
You're travelling to one of Africa's most extraordinary wildlife destinations, often staying in relatively remote lodges, accompanied by experienced guides and taking part in carefully regulated wildlife encounters.
The cost reflects not only the travel arrangements but also the specialist guiding, conservation permits and logistics involved in operating holidays in these environments.
And unlike many holidays, where the memories gradually fade into one another, I suspect that sitting just metres away from a family of mountain gorillas is something you'll remember for the rest of your life.
You can't really put a price on that sort of experience.
Let DG Travel Help You Discover Uganda
With nearly 40 years of experience in the travel industry, one of the things I enjoy most is helping clients discover destinations they might never previously have considered.
Uganda is certainly one of those places.
It's not necessarily a destination for everyone, and that's absolutely fine. But for those with a genuine interest in wildlife, conservation, nature and experiencing something extraordinary, it deserves serious consideration.
At DG Travel, we can discuss the different itineraries, explain what's involved, look at the best times to travel and help you choose a holiday that suits your interests, available time and budget.
We work with specialist operators such as Rainbow Tours because we believe that when you're travelling somewhere remote, having the right people looking after the arrangements really matters.
Whether it's five nights in search of mountain gorillas or a longer journey through Uganda's national parks, we'll help you plan the experience that's right for you.
Because some holidays are simply holidays.
